Why is Daily Prayer Important?

Curiosities

Simply put, for followers of Jesus Christ, prayer is the best way to communicate with God. It is the vehicle for daily dialogue with the one who created us. The importance of daily communication through prayer cannot be overstated—it is mentioned over 250 times in the Scriptures. So, why is daily prayer so important? First, daily prayer gives us the opportunity to share all aspects of our lives with God. Second, it allows us to express gratitude for the things God provides. Third, daily prayer offers a platform to confess our sins and seek help to overcome them. Fourth, it is an act of worship and obedience. And finally, daily prayer is a way to recognize who is truly in control of our lives. Let’s take a closer look at each of these important reasons.

Daily prayer gives us the opportunity to share every part of our lives with God.

Life circumstances change daily. In fact, things can go from bad to worse in a very short time. God calls us to present our concerns to Him so that He may address them and provide blessings in due time. He also calls us to share our joys and successes with Him. In reality, Jeremiah 33:3 says, “Call to me, and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.” God wants us to call out to Him so He can answer our prayers. He also wants to share with us the incredible blessings we might miss if we do not approach Him in prayer. Finally, James 4:8 tells us, “Come near to God, and He will come near to you.” God wants us close to Him at all times.

Daily prayer gives us the opportunity to express gratitude for the things He provides in our lives.

It’s no secret that we should give thanks to the Lord for all He provides and all He does for us. His goodness and mercy toward us should be acknowledged daily. In 1 Chronicles 16:34, we are told to “Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever.” The psalmist says in Psalm 9:1, “I will give thanks to you, Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds.” We pray daily to recognize His faithfulness and abundant provision in our lives.

Daily prayer provides the platform to confess our sins and seek help to turn away from sin.

Let’s be honest, we all sin daily, whether we realize it or not. So, as followers of Jesus Christ, what should we do? The Bible is very clear: “Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, ‘I will confess my transgressions to the Lord.’ And you forgave the guilt of my sin” (Psalm 32:5). We are to tell God what He already knows and do so daily. Daily prayer is a great place to unburden ourselves of the weakening effects of sin. Too often, Christians carry unconfessed sins that hinder their personal relationship with Jesus Christ, when we should humbly submit and ask for forgiveness in prayer. Another important element of daily prayer is asking God for the strength to repent of our sins. Only God can help us turn away from our sins, and for that to happen, He needs to hear our plea for repentance.

Daily prayer is an act of worship and obedience.

Perhaps no verse summarizes better why we should pray daily than 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18: “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” God’s will for His children is that they rejoice in Him, pray to Him, and give thanks. To pray continually simply means that we should make prayer a regular habit and never stop doing it. Prayer is also an act of worship because when we pray, we are showing how much we adore Him. Daily prayer is also an act of obedience that brings joy to the Lord when He sees His children following His commands.

Daily prayer is a way to recognize who is truly in control of our lives.

As Christians, we know who is truly in control. God is sovereign. Nothing happens without God’s knowledge (Isaiah 46:9-10; Daniel 4:17). Since He is sovereign over everything, He deserves our worship and praise. “Yours, Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours. Yours, Lord, is the kingdom; you are exalted as head over all” (1 Chronicles 29:11). God is our great king, and as such, He controls every aspect of our lives. Each day, we should humbly recognize His rightful place in our lives, showing reverence fitting for a great and wonderful King.

Finally, prayer is something we should all desire to do daily. Yet, for many Christians, it can be a challenge to humble themselves in daily prayer. For those who have been walking with the Lord for many years, daily prayer can become routine and lack the proper conviction or reverence. Whether one is a new believer or well-established in faith, prayer should always be seen as the best way to talk to God. Imagine not speaking to a loved one or close friend. How long would the relationship last? Daily prayer with God is daily communion with our heavenly Father. It’s truly amazing that God wants to have fellowship with us. In fact, the psalmist asks, “What is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?” (Psalm 8:4). Daily prayer is a wonderful way to grasp this incredible truth and the amazing privilege God has given us.
